Brewery: Granite Brewery
Beer: Galactic Pale Ale, 4.7% ABV / OG 1049
Where: Toronto, ON
Who: Mary Beth Keefe, Head Brewer
Granite Brewery was originally opened in Halifax, Nova Scotia by Mary Beth’s uncle Kevin and the Toronto location opened a few years later, in 1991, by Mary Beth’s dad Ron. Kevin trained at the Ringwood Brewery in England and took the opportunity to bring the English style ales to Halifax and then Toronto. Since Mary Beth took over as Head Brewer, she’s helped grow their selection of ales from seven to over fifteen seasonal and rotating drafts with a specialty in cask-conditioned ales.
The Galactic Pale Ale is golden in colour and features cascade hops from the USA and galaxy hops from New Zealand. I found it to have a bit of a sharper, hoppier taste than the Northern Logger, but it’s still quite enjoyable! I had my first try of it last Friday when we were making our #IWDToronto signs, and I’m having my second go at it tonight as I write this. I wasn’t sure if I was that into it on Friday, but I think I just didn’t have the opportunity to savour it – we were so deep into our feminism, haha! After trying it again, I definitely like it! I could probably have a few of these before moving on to something a little more mild.
Cheers to this great beer from me & Bill (he hangs out in our dining room)! I hope to make it up to the brewery in a few weeks to try a few of their other ales. They’re right on the corner of Eglinton & Mount Pleasant, so they’re super TTC accessible.
Happy International Women’s Day!!
